Hailey Bieber is facing online backlash after speaking about overconsumption while reflecting on the success of her skincare brand, Rhode. The model and entrepreneur shared her views during Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit. However, many social media users argued her comments conflicted with Rhode’s growing lineup of products and accessories.
Hailey Bieber’s remarks about overconsumption draw criticism over Rhode’s frequent product launches
Speaking at the event alongside Rhode co-founder Lauren Ratner, Hailey Bieber explained that the brand built its strategy around a small collection of essentials. She noted that Rhode prioritizes this curated approach over constantly releasing new products.
“I really am not interested in overconsumption,” Bieber said. She explained that Rhode’s philosophy has always centered on creating one version of each product that customers genuinely need. Bieber added that she wants every release to reflect items she personally uses rather than launching products simply to increase sales.
The comments quickly sparked debate online. Critics pointed to Rhode’s expanding catalog, which includes viral lip gloss phone cases and pimple patch accessories. They argued that these frequent releases directly contradict Bieber’s message against overconsumption.
One social media user wrote, “Frequent private jet user Hailey Bieber claims she’s not interested in overconsumption.” Another commented, “Didn’t you just, as in last week, sell a case for pimple patches?”
Others referenced Rhode’s signature lip gloss phone case, with one user posting, “I’m not interested in overconsumption… girl then explain this.” Some Reddit users also questioned the statement. One wrote, “I’m not interested in overconsumption, I’m just interested in selling you the exact same lip peptide product in 12 different tints.”
Others defended the broader concept, noting that people discussed overconsumption for decades long before social media trends emerged.
Critics continue to push back despite Rhode’s official website stating that the company aims to reduce overconsumption. The brand maintains that it achieves this goal through limited product releases and consciously sourced ingredients.
Rhode initially launched with just three skincare products in 2022 before expanding into blushes, tinted lip treatments, and viral beauty accessories. Meanwhile, Bieber continues serving as the brand’s Chief Creative Officer following its $1 billion acquisition by e.l.f. Cosmetics.
