Meghan Markle‘s lifestyle brand As Ever is facing fresh scrutiny over its new holiday hamper. A royal expert has suggested that the offering is the brand’s attempt to “offload” its leftover inventory. The claim comes as the label has begun teasing its upcoming launches, starting with its first-ever advent calendar.
Royal expert slams Meghan Markle’s As Ever holiday hamper
What is billed as a holiday treat from Meghan Markle‘s As Ever line is being criticized by a royal expert as a move to clear unsold inventory. Marketed as a curated seasonal gift set, the hamper reportedly includes several long-available As Ever products. Among them are its signature jams, teas, and other pantry staples.
Weighing in, Alison Boshoff told NewsNation, “She’s got a lot of jam, or fruit spread, as she calls it. She’s got to ship this stuff. So basically what she’s going to have in the hamper is just a way of offloading the jam. She’s got absolutely tons of this stuff unsold.”
Boshoff noted that a large portion of the products will be expiring by next summer. She said, “Some of it even earlier than that. She just needs to get rid of it.”
According to the Editor-at-Large at the Daily Mail, an authentic British hamper typically goes beyond tea and jam to feature a mix of sweet and savory items like cookies, cheese biscuits, pâté and even luxury treats like caviar, and usually includes an alcoholic beverage as well.
Offering a blunt assessment of As Ever, Boshoff argued that Meghan Markle has misjudged her own brand from the outset. The columnist went on to say, “What this shows is the limitation of her brand, which really is simply now jam and tea.”
The royal watcher added, “She keeps on referring to these things as pantry staples. And you think, ‘God d**n it, girl. Nobody is spending that much money on jam and then buying it again and just going to spread it on their toast in private… You’re not buying it as a pantry staple.”
