Speaking on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the Oscar-nominated actor revealed the bizarre story behind his hair transformation.
Meyers asked Stan how he “found the idea” of shaving his head for the role. Stan shaved his head two days after he and his mother attended the 97th Academy Awards.
With Stan ready to take on any challenge needed for the role, director Cristian Mungiu decided to test the look on a willing fan.
“[Mungiu] basically went online, as far as I understand, and asked fans of mine whether they would step forward for this experiment,” he recalled of the preparations for the new look. “Somebody went like, ‘I will do it,’ and then he got a fan to shave.”
“I would do anything, obviously. I don’t like looking like myself, at least in work situations. I want to put the character first,” he said. “I want to serve the story. I think sometimes when you look like yourself, you get recognized for maybe a certain role you’ve played many, many times.”
“You have to do a little bit of work to change the perspective,” he added.
In an exclusive chat with People at the Toronto International Film Festival, Stan revealed that he was “happy” to shave his head for the film. The actor also said that “some of the fun of being an actor” is to “change things up.”
Speaking to TIFF in September, Stan said that he “felt good” after cutting off his hair. “We needed to make these people be as relatable as possible, as real as possible,” the actor explained.
