Macklemore’s Decade-Old Hit Is Suddenly Back in the Spotlight

More than a decade after its original chart run, Macklemore’s Can’t Hold Us made it back to the Official Singles Chart in the top 100. The 2011 track, which was released by hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, featured vocals from Ray Dalton. It later appeared on their 2012 album The Heist, which was produced by Lewis, earning multiple Grammy Awards.

Macklemore’s Can’t Hold Us makes an unexpected return to the UK charts

Macklemore’s hit song has returned to the Official Singles Chart, landing at number 88. The 43-year-old’s return to the charts comes amid the controversy over his removal from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour after he made onstage comments supporting Palestine.

In an Instagram post on September 14, Macklemore claimed that Sheeran told him billionaire Robert Kraft had contacted him about his upcoming performance at Gillette Stadium. According to the rapper, Kraft said he would “not be allowed” to perform. Macklemore further claimed that Sheeran said the words “Free Palestine” and the Palestinian flag image “were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with.”

After Macklemore was dropped from the lineup, Irish singer-songwriter Aaron Rowe also announced his departure. Danish band Lukas Graham said they would no longer be part of the tour. Irish folk band Beoga also announced their exit. Later, Sheeran addressed the controversy, saying removing Macklemore from the tour was the promoter’s decision, not his.

Meanwhile, Macklemore’s three-date Free Palestine Tour also sold out. He will perform in Dublin on October 26, Paris on October 29, and London on October 30. The rapper shared the sold-out news on Instagram, saying he was “blown away” by how quickly fans bought tickets.

He wrote, “We put these shows together fast and in community, believing that musicians can stand in solidarity with Palestine, use the stage to raise funds, and show what collective action can look like. When those in power try to silence our calls for liberation, art will always be a form of resistance.”
