Tom Cruise is often described as the last Hollywood star, a claim that gained momentum when Top Gun: Maverick made $1.5 billion at the box office in 2022. However, Digger, his latest film, seems to not have inspired much confidence in the studio.
The film has received some mixed reviews ahead of its release. Some have even dubbed it a ‘misfire.’ Many have also expressed concern about WB and Legendary making back their $130 million investment, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Critics have also cautioned that while the film might be an awards contender, there is little it will do to please the mainstream audience. The film is currently tracking to make $20 million on its opening weekend.
The movie follows Cruise’s Digger Rockwell, an oil tycoon. The film is going to see the character race to save the world from a disaster of his own creation. Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons join the Edge of Tomorrow alum in key roles in the movie.
However, according to FlixPatrol, the most recent data suggests that Top Gun: Maverick remains the most streamed film on Paramount+, clearly demonstrating that fans are still hungry for a Cruise-led film. This could mean that Digger might be in for a bigger payday at the box office than first anticipated.
What else has Tom Cruise been in besides Digger and Top Gun: Maverick?
Tom Cruise has established himself as an action star in the Hollywood landscape. But there have been plenty of films that the actor has made that either lean towards comedy or even romantic drama. Yet, Cruise’s most recognizable franchise remains the Mission: Impossible series, which the actor has led with a recurring cast such as Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg.
Cruise has also appeared in period drama movies like The Last Samurai. He starred opposite Emily Blunt in the science fiction action film Edge of Tomorrow. However, not every film that Cruise has been a part of has achieved the kind of success that Top Gun: Maverick has. Cruise was famously part of the first installment of The Dark Universe, The Mummy, which was panned critically and commercially. Rock of Ages was another box office misstep for the actor.
