Michael B. Jordan says he got sick after winning his first Oscar and plans to take a break
An Oscar win led to an unexpected repercussion for actor Michael B. Jordan. The 39-year-old won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in “Sinners”. However, Jordan revealed that the chock-a-bloc awards season took a physical toll on him. The actor admitted in a Vogue interview that his body had hit the limit after months of campaigning, interviews, appearances and the pressure surrounding the Academy Awards.
Recalling the days following his win, Jordan told Vogue, “Like, you reached the finish line, and your body said, ‘Alright, I got you here, time to shut down for a second.’”
The actor recalled being significantly ill amid family and friends who had travelled from New Jersey to celebrate the win.
“They’re ordering food, talking, laughing about the night, telling stories, just reliving it all,” he recalled. While his near ones celebrated, Jordan fell sick and spent the next four days receiving treatment via an intravenous drip.
The breakout role of portraying twin brothers Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” has earned the actor widespread acclaim and Oscar recognition. Despite the illness, he remains active now but plans to slow down in 2027.
He is currently juggling several major projects, including “The Thomas Crown Affair”, which he is directing, producing, and starring in. He is also working on the reboot of “Miami Vice” alongside Austin Butler.
Even so, the actor feels a break is on the horizon following years of relentless work. “I’ll probably take the rest of next year off,” he told Vogue. “That’s probably when I’m going to do more reflecting and processing of all of this. Because honestly, it’s been—I’ve been moving.”
The actor has previously talked of taking a break, but things seem more serious this time around. Jordan is ready to hit pause and reflect on his career before deciding what comes next.
