Sally Field used her latest Emmy Awards victory to celebrate both her film and the country where it was made.
The 79-year-old actress won Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures on September 14. During her acceptance speech, Field offered particularly warm praise for Canada, calling the country a friend and neighbor.

Field highlighted Canada while thanking those connected to the production.
“And it’s Canada. Blessed Canada, our neighbors, our friends,” she said.
The comment stood out because political and economic tensions between the United States and Canada had recently drawn attention. However, Field did not directly name Donald Trump during that portion of her speech.
Her remarks came after Trump ordered federal databases and mapping systems in the United States to use “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario. The decision followed the collapse of trade talks between the two countries. The U.S. had also imposed 50 percent tariffs on various Canadian goods, while Canada prepared counter-tariffs.
As per OK Magazine Canadian officials pushed back against the lake’s name change. Ontario Premier Doug Ford maintained that the body of water remained Lake Ontario.
“It’s Lake Ontario to Canadians and the rest of the world. Now and forever,” Ford wrote.
Field kept the main focus of her Sally Field Emmy speech on Remarkably Bright Creatures and the people who helped bring the project together.
“Wow, wow. This is not supposed to happen. I love this project from page one. I have been so grateful and proud to be part of this community,” she said.
She also used the moment to speak about creative expression.
“With art, our voices matter. We can’t let those voices be silenced or compromised or merged,” Field added.
Her praise for Canada therefore came during a speech that centered on gratitude for the film while unfolding against the backdrop of the ongoing U.S.-Canada dispute.
