What is the Go Deep: The DeSean Jackson Story documentary about?
Go Deep: The DeSean Jackson Story follows DeSean Jackson’s journey from a young football prospect to an NFL star. The documentary is built from thousands of hours of raw home-video footage recorded over 35 years by his older brother, Byron Jackson.
Byron was a football player himself and spent two years on the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad before leaving the sport to pursue filmmaking. He then began recording DeSean’s development from Pop Warner football through high school, college, and the NFL.
The footage gives the documentary a closer look at the Jackson family. Their father, Bill Jackson, believed football could provide his family with a better life and pushed his sons toward that goal. His commitment to their careers also created disagreements and difficult moments.
DeSean won a state championship at Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 2004 before becoming an All-American at the University of California, Berkeley. He went on to play 15 NFL seasons for teams including the Eagles, the Commanders, the Buccaneers, the Raiders, the Ravens, and the Rams.
Jackson finished his NFL career with 641 receptions and 66 touchdowns, including four punt-return scores. He remains the only player in NFL history to score a walk-off touchdown on a punt return.
The documentary also explores the controversies, difficult choices, and pressures surrounding Jackson’s career. Today, he is the head coach of the Delaware State Hornets, beginning a new chapter in football.
