Reiner won the award on Sept. 6 at the ceremony, formerly known as the Creative Arts Emmys, held at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater. Presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey accepted the honor on Reiner’s behalf. Turning to the crowd, she said, “We all wish he were here,” reports TMZ. His fellow nominees included Michael J. Fox and Brett Goldstein for Shrinking, Hamish Linklater for Widow’s Bay, Christopher McDonald for Hacks and Connor Storrie for Saturday Night Live.

The actor and filmmaker was renowned for directing classics such as The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally. He previously won two Emmys, in 1974 and 1978, for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in All in the Family. The audience also gave his latest victory a heartfelt standing ovation. The tribute took on added significance given the tragic circumstances surrounding Reiner’s death. Prosecutors allege that his son, Nick Reiner, killed Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, inside their Brentwood home on Dec. 14, 2025.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Rob and Michele died from multiple sharp-force injuries. Authorities arrested Nick Reiner a few hours later near the University of Southern California. The 32-year-old remains jailed without bail at Los Angeles’ Twin Towers Correctional Facility.

Prosecutors have accused Nick of murdering his parents and charged him with two counts of murder. He has pleaded not guilty and denied the special-circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait. Nick’s next court appearance is a pretrial hearing scheduled for Sept. 15.
