Apple TV has released the official teaser trailer for Being Heumann. It’s an upcoming biographical drama film starring Mark Ruffalo. The sneak peek comes just ahead of its premiere at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival on September 10.
Being Heumann arrives in select theaters on November 6, before making its streaming debut on Apple TV on November 13. It is based on Judith Heumann’s powerful memoir, Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist.
The movie is directed by Sian Heder, best known for writing and directing the acclaimed films Tallulah and CODA. The latter earned Heder an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Being Heumann was announced as the opening film of the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (via The Hollywood Reporter). The event kicks off on September 10.

Being Heumann tells the true story of Judy Heumann
Being Heumann chronicles the inspiring story of Judy Heumann, the “Mother of the Disability Rights Movement.” She was a lifelong civil rights advocate for people with disabilities. Heumann was also a pivotal figure behind the development of human rights legislation and policies for children and adults with disabilities.
The trailer introduces Ruth Madeley as Judith Heumann and showcases her relentless fight against a system that has historically overlooked the challenges faced by the disability community. The vignettes show Heumann leading a group of young adults who raise their voices against discrimination.
The teaser also shows Heumann and the others storming a federal building to demand their rights. They refuse to leave until a bureaucrat, played by Mark Ruffalo, takes action.
The movie’s official logline calls the movie a “revolutionary, irreverent and deeply human story of the least likely people trying to pull off the impossible and change the lives of millions.”
Besides Madeley and Ruffalo, Being Heumann also stars Dylan O’Brien, Madeline Delp, Rob Delaney, Ray Fisher, and more.
