What happens in the Being Heumann trailer?

The trailer begins with Ruth Madeley, who plays Judy Heumann, lying in bed. The footage opens with a dialogue: “Disability is not a tragedy. It is a tremendous hassle.” Set to rock music, the trailer depicts the historic 1977 disability rights protest in San Francisco as a defining act of resistance.

The 2-minute, 34-second trailer highlights the everyday barriers faced by people with disabilities in an unfiltered way. After introducing Heumann, the footage further focuses on the 1977 protest. Activists gather to protest the federal government’s failure to implement and enforce Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Judy challenges the way society treats disabled people, saying, “They see you in front of the stairs, and they think that you’re the problem. The stairs are the problem.”

Apart from Ruffalo and Madeley, the cast also includes Dylan O’Brien, Rob Delaney, Ray Fisher, Madeline Delp, Michael Patrick Thornton, and more.

Being Heumann premiered as the opening-night film at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2026. It is also scheduled to screen in the Gala program at the BFI London Film Festival.

Directed by Siân Heder, Being Heumann will be released on November 6, 2026. The film will begin streaming globally on Apple TV on November 13, 2026.
