Randy Quaid has criticized the decision to cast Anne Hathaway opposite Tom Cruise in the upcoming Days of Thunder 2. Quaid, who appeared in the original film, has publicly argued that Nicole Kidman should return for the sequel instead. Randy Quaid believes Days of Thunder 2 should reunite Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman instead of pairing the Hollywood superstar with Anne Hathaway.
Quaid, who appeared in the original 1990 racing film, voiced his preference after Hathaway was announced as the new co-star for the sequel. He directly appealed to Cruise to bring back Kidman, who played Dr. Claire Lewicki in the original. “We need Nicole back. Don’t be a p***y, @TomCruise. You need the original girl. It’s not personal; it’s filmmaking. Anne isn’t sexy, because and if you haven’t noticed, she’s pregnant,” Quaid wrote on X.
Quaid later expanded on his argument, writing, “If I were in control of production, a real sequel worth watching for DAYS OF THUNDER would be seeing Tom and Nicole together on screen again. We don’t need a new girl; we need a new race car!” The actor also criticized Hathaway’s casting in another post, explaining, “Anne Hathaway is a leftist, woke, horrible choice for DAYS OF THUNDER NASCAR audience who are MAGA.” He continued, “The sexy older chick for Tom in this film needs to be Nicole. That’s the casting that would sell the idea.”
There may also be a possibility of Quaid returning to the franchise. Before making those comments, he appeared to hint at his own involvement in the sequel. In a video posted on X, he said, “Hey, Tom Cruise just called me. We’re making Days of Thunder 2!”
Paramount Pictures has already confirmed Hathaway for the project. She will appear alongside Cruise and is expected to play a team owner and engineer. The studio has not revealed further plot details. Days of Thunder 2 is scheduled to arrive in IMAX on June 2, 2028.
