Unique SNL Movie Hits Peacock Today

Peacock has added a unique Saturday Night Live documentary to its streaming lineup on August 20, 2026. The documentary, directed by Ro Haber, was originally released digitally on June 23, 2026, following a festival run.

We Are Pat is a documentary feature that explores how ideas around gender identity and comedy have evolved since the 1990s. The film centers on the famous androgynous character Pat, created and played by Julia Sweeney on Saturday Night Live in the early 1990s.

The character fascinated filmmaker Ro Haber during childhood. Years later, after coming out as transgender, Haber began re-examining what Pat represented in pop culture. This inspired the director to revisit the character through a critical, modern lens 35 years after Pat first debuted on SNL.

The synopsis of the comedy documentary, per IMDb, reads, “Examines ‘It’s Pat’ through the lens of 2025, trans visibility and their own conflicted recollection of the controversial SNL character played by Julia Sweeney.”

IMDb rates the documentary a 6.9 out of 10. The film earned Haber a Special Jury Mention for New Documentary Director at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival.

What is the plot of the We Are Pat SNL movie?

The character of Pat was represented in a way that deliberately made other characters in the show uncomfortable. Pat’s gender identity was often treated as a joke. The film We Are Pat revisits the Saturday Night Live character from a critical point of view, as Haber wanted to unravel why Pat’s character mattered.

The character was played by Julia Sweeney, who appears in the documentary to reflect on the character she once represented. Ro Haber made a team of queer and trans comedians alongside writers to understand the character from a modern-day perspective.

“Beyond comedy, We Are Pat raises complex questions: How does art age? What responsibility does a creator have as cultural values evolve? Can we reclaim narratives that once mocked us, transforming pain into laughter, visibility, and ultimately, our own creations?” reads the official preview on the film’s website.
