Netflix is in the works to develop a prequel to a hit TV show. The streaming giant has taken up the project just days before the fifth and final season of the action-adventure series drops this month.
The final season of Outer Banks is scheduled to release on Netflix on August 20, 2026. The first season of the action show premiered on April 10, 2026. Now that they have concluded the teen-drama series, creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke are aiming to develop a prequel.
The new show, Kildare, will go back two decades in the timeline of the original series. The narrative will delve into how and why Kildare was divided into two different social groups. Reflecting on the development of the upcoming show, creator Josh Pate told Deadline, “We’re working on the script. We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be.”
How the new prequel will explore the origins of the Kooks-Pogues divide
The synopsis of the original series, per IMDb, reads, “On an island of haves and have-nots, teen John B enlists his three best friends to hunt for a legendary treasure linked to his father’s disappearance.”
While the original series began with a rift between the Pogue and Kook teenagers, the new prequel will unravel how the divide between the two groups originated twenty years earlier.
Talking about the setting and storyline of the Outer Banks prequel, Pate said, “It really is the story of how the island split — and it’s particularly relevant in our country right now — how it split into the haves and have-nots, how the Kooks and the Pogues started. How did this rift start?”
Meanwhile, Burke told Deadline that the story would delve into the parents’ generation of the Outer Banks lead characters.
