Ben Crump announced Wednesday that the Mississippi Board of Nursing had opened a professional misconduct investigation into Wonsley. He said the inquiry stemmed from an anonymous complaint. Crump described the action as an effort to “scare her into staying quiet.” He also called it an attempt to pressure a grieving mother.
Hours later, Wonsley shared a statement on social media. She said the case had been closed and thanked supporters for their prayers. Wonsley added that the complaint caused additional pain during an already devastating period. She also said she loved both her job and her patients.
When contacted by PEOPLE, the Mississippi Board of Nursing declined to confirm or deny any investigation. The board said all investigations remain confidential under state law. It also noted that it must investigate every complaint it receives. No additional details were provided.
Wonsley has publicly called for a transparent investigation into her son’s death. Nolan Wells disappeared after traveling to Mississippi’s Horn Island with friends over the Fourth of July weekend. His body was found on July 6 after an extensive search. Authorities initially said they did not suspect foul play.
However, Wonsley and her husband questioned that early conclusion. They have repeatedly said they want a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Nolan’s death. Crump’s legal team is conducting its own investigation alongside authorities. They have also encouraged witnesses to come forward.
An official autopsy has been completed, but the findings remain unreleased. The report will be presented to a grand jury under local procedure. An independent autopsy commissioned by the family listed Nolan’s cause and manner of death as undetermined. It also noted findings requiring further investigation, according to the family’s forensic pathologist.
