Rebel Wilson’s most controversial project is finally ready for its close-up. The Deb locks in a digital release date after a long and legally turbulent road to audiences.
The Deb previews Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut in new trailer
Sunrise Films released the first trailer for Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut, The Deb, as Deadline reported on July 20. The musical comedy will arrive on digital platforms in the U.S. on August 25. Vertigo Releasing will handle the UK debut a day earlier on August 24.
The film follows Taylah Simpkins, a high school outcast in small-town Australia preparing for her Debutante Ball. Her city cousin Maeve arrives and dismisses the event as a “heteronormative shit-show.” The two cousins eventually team up and discover truths about themselves along the way.
Natalie Abbott leads the cast as Taylah, with Charlotte MacInnes playing Maeve. Stevie Jean, Tara Morice, Steph Tisdell and Shane Jacobson also star in the film. Wilson herself appears in a supporting role throughout the feature.
The film’s release faced significant delays due to overlapping legal disputes between Wilson and the production team. Wilson accused producers Amanda Ghost, Gregor Cameron and Vince Holden of misconduct, including allegations of embezzlement and inappropriate behavior toward MacInnes (via Deadline). The producers and MacInnes denied these claims and filed separate defamation lawsuits against Wilson.
MacInnes specifically denied making any sexual harassment complaint against Ghost. She later sued Wilson in the Federal Court of Australia over social media posts. MacInnes alleged those posts damaged her reputation by suggesting she withdrew complaints in exchange for career opportunities. During the April 2026 hearing, the court heard MacInnes had signed a $150,000 record deal with Atlantic Records (via The Guardian).
The ongoing legal battles pushed back the original U.S. release date of April 9. The Los Angeles Superior Court has scheduled a trial for October 2026. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and later opened in Australia earlier this year.
