Sometimes people think that they can get away with reckless driving just because there doesn’t seem to be any cops around. That’s what a motorcyclist in California thought after going more than 130 miles per hour on a highway near the San Juan and Capistrano area. Unbeknownst to the rider, a California Highway Patrol aircraft captured the joyride from the sky and followed the driver, who apparently had to race through traffic to reach a sushi restaurant.
Motorcyclist takes a dangerous joyride thinking no one is watching
The California Highway Patrol in Capistrano posted aerial footage of the motorcyclist from the agency’s fixed-wing aircraft in an official post on its Facebook page.
As noted by KTLA, the video shows a driver on a red bike zooming down the 5 Freeway in Orange County at top speeds on the Fourth of July, going about twice as fast as all the other vehicles on the road. The vehicle moves dangerously from lane to lane, occasionally crossing over to the center median to go around cars in the leftmost lane.
With no police cars going after the motorcycle nearby, the driver continued to speed through traffic for at least five minutes, changing onto the northbound 405 Freeway and making an exit at Culver Drive in Irvine. After a few turns, the driver stopped in a parking lot behind a sushi restaurant.
But it only took a minute before police patrol cars entered the parking lot and detained the motorcyclist, who didn’t appear to resist the officers during the arrest.
The video reveals the driver was arrested for reckless driving and that a judge signed a court order seizing the motorcycle for 30 days.
Commenters on the Facebook post were confused about why the motorcyclist decided to speed in the first place. One wrote, “Just what was so important that he risked his life, and the lives of everyone he was near?”
Another praised the swift work of the police: “You may be the fastest and most talented driver out there… and you CAN outrun a helicopter… but you’re not outrunning a radio. Excellent air unit work!”
