Donald Trump came very close to skipping his recent trip to France, but ended up agreeing to the proposal as French President Emmanuel Macron seemingly knew about his “weakness.” The Republican Party leader revealed in a recent interview that he only agreed to dine with world leaders in Versailles after Macron convinced him of the visit over his affinity towards the commune’s iconic palace.
Donald Trump stayed in France because of Versailles
The 80-year-old US President opened up about his trip to France for the G7 summit, which culminated in him visiting the historic Palace of Versailles.
“Emmanuel Macron of France, who won’t be there that much longer – he’s the President, and I’ll tell you what, he did a great job hosting the G7,” Donald Trump noted while speaking with Axios’ Marc Caputo on June 19. “No games, no nothing. And he invited me about a week before. He said, ‘Would you do me a favor? Would you come into Paris? We’d like to honor you.’ I view it as honoring the nation.”
Trump continued, “He had the biggest people in Europe there, and beyond, I mean, some people in Versailles. And I was sort of not gonna do it, but Macron knew my weakness, because I think Versailles is one of the great places.”
This prompted Caputo to ask what his weakness was. Trump replied in an instant, “Places like Versailles. They don’t do dinners in Versailles. And we had a fantastic dinner.”
In addition to having dinner with global leaders, Donald Trump also signed a peace agreement with Iran at the Palace of Versailles, as per The Mirror. While the exact details regarding the dynamics between the two conflicting nations have yet to come out, the truce finally brought the 12-week war to a halt.
Talking to reporters at the G7 summit, Trump claimed that the agreement would prevent “worldwide depression.” He added, “I didn’t want to see economic catastrophe.”
