‘Really F—ing Green’: Jon Stewart Targets Donald Trump Over Pool Algae

Jon Stewart just compared a national monument to a Mountain Dew fountain. The Daily Show host unpacks the algae-infested Reflecting Pool and the murky connections behind its renovation.

Jon Stewart’s latest Donald Trump joke involves pool algae

Jon Stewart tackled the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool’s algae infestation on Monday’s episode of The Daily Show. The host reacted to CNN footage showing the pool’s transformation into what reporters called “a sea of green.” Stewart quipped, “That is really f—ing green. That s—‘s neon green! Did they replace the water with Mountain Dew?”

The segment revealed that high phosphate levels caused a significant algae bloom after a recent renovation. One company involved in the project, Greenwater Services, won the job through a “no-bid contract.” The company is “owned by a trust run by Republican donor John Cafaro.”

Stewart joked that Cafaro looked like “an extra in ‘Guys and Dolls'” after showing his photo to the audience. He then added, “Does Donald Trump do business with anyone normal? Looks like Donnie Brasco got stung by a bee.” The host also compared the donor’s appearance to Gomez Addams from the 1980s.

Anderson Cooper’s reporting added another layer to the segment during the broadcast. Cooper explained that Cafaro is a “Mar-a-Lago neighbor” of the president. He also noted that Cafaro “pled guilty to conspiracy to bribe then-congressman James Traficant Jr.” back in 2001.

Stewart seized on that detail with characteristic wit during his monologue. He said, “The pool guy bribed the congressman, and now he gets the pool contract. That tracks.” He then adopted a gruff voice and joked, “What do I do? Let’s just say I’m in the chlorine management business.”

The renovation has reportedly cost $16 million and continues to cause problems for the White House. Stewart closed the pool segment by pivoting to coverage of Vice President JD Vance’s Iran negotiations in Switzerland.
