Donald Trump praised Sen. Jon Husted’s athleticism and physique during a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, on Monday, according to The Independent. The president made the remarks after former Super Bowl-winning coach Jon Gruden introduced him and mentioned playing college football with Husted.
“I’m standing over here, and I don’t do this with men very often. I started examining [Husted’s] body because I didn’t know he was a great athlete,” Trump told the crowd. “I looked at his a**, and I looked at the whole, and then I looked at his hands. Look at his hands. He’s got these like claws.”
Husted earned All-American honors as a defensive back at the University of Dayton. Gruden played alongside him on the Dayton Flyers in 1985. Trump said he asked Gruden about Husted’s ability, and Gruden called him “the best player on the team.”
The rally aimed to boost Republican candidates ahead of the midterm elections. Husted faces a challenge from former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown. A recent CNN poll conducted by SSRS showed Brown leading Husted by six points among likely Ohio voters, 49 to 43 percent.
Husted later joined Trump on stage and addressed the crowd directly. “Mr. President, you’ve helped bring this region back and this state to prominence,” he said. “We are going to do everything that we can to win on November 3, and you’re going to bring it home with us, aren’t you?” Trump responded by referencing the athletic revelation again. “Wow, he’s really changed since you all learned how great an athlete he was,” Trump said. “I just hit him on the back, and I hurt my hand a little bit. He’s like a piece of steel.”
