Jenny Slatten gives health update after ALS diagnosis reveal

Hours after publicly revealing her amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis on May 19, 90 Day Fiancé star Jenny Slatten shared a personal health update with fans. In an Instagram Story featuring a selfie with her husband, Slatten wrote, “I’m still able to walk around and Sumit is still allowed to smile.”

“At first, we tried to keep it private because it’s been very emotional and overwhelming for us,” they stated in a joint Instagram post on May 19. “We were hoping to find some kind of solution before speaking publicly. But after trying for some time, we feel like it’s time to reach out.” In addition, the couple thanked fans for helping carry them through this difficult time.

“Thank you so much for all the love and support,” the post read. “Right now, we are open to any kind of help — treatments, clinical trials, lifestyle changes, or anything that could help treat this disease or slow down its progression.”

Jenny Slatten was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, last December, about a year after her symptoms first appeared. In a May 19 PEOPLE interview, Singh said that they first noticed something was wrong when she choked “badly” on water.

After that, Slatten had difficulty swallowing pills and eventually developed slurred speech. When she attended a 90 Day Fiancé holiday party in New York City, fans noticed the concerning symptoms. Many urged her to get evaluated for ALS, the same disease her father died from 10 years earlier.

Once back in India, the 68-year-old consulted several neurologists to get a definitive diagnosis. At first, doctors thought she had “a little clot” in her brain. A second opinion later confirmed that she had the neurodegenerative disease.
