A new rumor suggests that two Avengers who appeared in Infinity War will have their roles reversed in Doomsday. Premiering in theaters later this year, Avengers: Doomsday will see multiple heroes confront Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Additionally, it serves as the first part of the Multiverse Saga’s closing chapter, which concludes with Avengers: Secret Wars.
Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr.’s Infinity War roles could be reversed
Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr.’s roles in Avengers: Infinity War could reportedly be reversed in Doomsday, as per a new rumor.
This comes from scooper MyTimetoShineHello, who wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Their roles will be reversed soon enough.” The post also shared a GIF of one of the most emotional moments from Infinity War in which Peter Parker embraces Tony Stark while fading away from existence due to Thanos’ snap. However, the scooper did not delve into any details about the supposed role reversal.
In reference to the image shared in the scooper’s post, one fan asked, “He’s going to be hugging Stark from the back?” Meanwhile, another fan shared an illustration of Doctor Doom and Spider-Man seemingly going in for a hug.
Notably, any interaction between the two characters in the film is still only a rumor as of writing. While Robert Downey Jr. appears to be an integral part of Doomsday, Holland’s involvement in the film has not yet been confirmed.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to open in theaters on December 18, 2026. Anthony and Joe Russo directed the film from a script by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. The directing duo also co-produced with Marvel via their production banner AGBO. In addition to Robert Downey Jr., the film’s cast includes returning MCU veterans like Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, and Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson / Captain America, among many others.
Meanwhile, Holland’s Spider-Man will return to the big screen in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The film releases on July 31, 2026, roughly five months before Doomsday’s premiere. It will mark a new chapter for the webslinger in the MCU. The sequel will place him in a story that also features Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.
