Two light-hearted comedies featuring two Only Murders in the Building stars will be available to stream on Netflix next month. Based on a screenplay by Oscar-nominated writers, the original film centers on a father’s hilarious struggle with his daughter’s upcoming wedding, and, in the sequel, with her pregnancy.
Father of the Bride and its sequel to arrive on Netflix
Father of the Bride and Father of the Bride Part II will stream on Netflix from Monday, June 1, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix). It stars Steve Martin and Martin Short, who play Charles-Haden Savage and Oliver Putnam, respectively, in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.
The films are a reboot of the 1950 film series of the same name, which in turn was based on Edward Streeter’s 1949 eponymous novel. Oscar-nominated writer Charles Shyer helmed both films.
Father of the Bride follows George Banks. He is a protective father who struggles to accept that his daughter Annie is marrying Bryan, a man she met just a few months earlier. While his wife, Nina, warms up to Bryan, George is far from acceptance. Gea orge then becomes overwhelmed by the emotional and financial pressures of planning the wedding.
It debuted in theaters on December 20, 1991, and opened to a positive reception. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a respectable 71% Tomatometer score and 70% Popcornmeter score. By the time it ended its theatrical run, it had grossed $89.3 million from domestic markets alone.
In Father of the Bride Part II, George undergoes another emotional turmoil. While Annie and Bryan announce that they are expecting a child, Nina discovers she is also expecting a baby. This leaves George to cope with becoming a father and a grandfather at the same time.
The sequel premiered on December 8, 1995. It received a less favorable reception compared to the original. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently has a Tomatometer score of 54% and a Popcornmeter score of 60%. At the box office, the film made $76.5 million domestically.
There’s also a third entry, titled Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish). It is a short film written and directed by Nancy Meyers. This 25-minute short reunites the cast for a virtual meeting. They plan a wedding during lockdown for George and Nina’s son, Mathew. It was released directly on Netflix and is now available on YouTube.
