John Travolta may have come close to turning one of Tinseltown’s most famous friendships into a real-life romance. Recently, an excerpt from “A Little More Love: The Life and Legacy of Olivia Newton-John” has been shared by PEOPLE. In it, claims were made that the “Grease” co-stars nearly became a couple off-screen years after starring together in the hit 1978 musical. The biography included comments from a musician who reportedly became close friends with Newton-John after joining her band.
New book claims legendary Grease co-stars John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John almost got romantic
According to the excerpt, the unnamed musician described Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta as “very, very close,” before adding, “Almost that close.” The musician, who had previously been married to a Scientologist, discussed Scientology with Newton-John. This led her to bring up John Travolta’s longtime connection to the church. Notably, Travolta joined the Church of Scientology in 1975 at age 21
“Obviously, you know John is a Scientologist,” Newton-John allegedly said. “I know the Church of Scientology really reveres him as a very valuable follower.” She then reportedly asked, “If I had married John, would he have expected me to become a Scientologist?”
The musician answered that it likely would have been encouraged, but not required.
Rumors surrounding the actors followed them for decades after “Grease” became a global success. Their chemistry was also addressed by actress Didi Conn, who played Frenchie in the film.
Speaking in a 2018 interview with MailOnline UK, Conn reflected on one of the pair’s kissing scenes. “They weren’t acting at that moment. It was real, it really was,” she said. However, neither actor publicly confirmed being romantically involved. Travolta later married actress Kelly Preston in 1991. That said, the couple remained together until her death from breast cancer in 2020.
Meanwhile, Newton-John was married to actor Matt Lattanzi from 1984 until 1995 before marrying businessman John Easterling in 2008. She died in 2022 at age 73 after battling breast cancer.
Following her death, Travolta shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. “My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much,” he wrote. “We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John!”
