Steve Carell Says a Marvel Star Told Him To Skip The Office Audition

Before landing one of TV’s most iconic comedy roles, Steve Carell almost walked away from The Office after a surprising warning from a Marvel star, a moment that could have changed sitcom history completely.

This Marvel actor warned Steve Carell not to audition for The Office

Steve Carell recently shared on Good Hang with Amy Poehler that Ant-Man star Paul Rudd pulled him aside and bluntly advised against even trying out for The Office. Recalling the moment, Carell said, “[He] was like, ‘Don’t do it, man. Don’t audition… There is no way.’” At the time, the idea of adapting the hit British series seemed risky, and many in the industry doubted it would work in the U.S.

Carell admitted he also avoided watching too much of the original version starring Ricky Gervais. He said, “He was so good and so specific… I thought, ‘If I watch a second more, I’m just gonna go on an audition with that.’” Instead, Carell chose to build his own take on Michael Scott, which later became a defining character in American comedy.

Early buzz around the show did not look promising. Steve Carell shared that the pilot tested badly, with audiences strongly disliking it at first. Still, the series ran from 2005 to 2011, eventually becoming a pop culture favorite. Carell later described it as a comfort show that gives viewers a sense of ease and familiarity.

Carell also spoke about how he handled Michael Scott’s exit from The Office. He wanted the character to evolve and chose a low-key farewell. Instead of a big send-off, Michael quietly leaves a day early. He says goodbye on his own terms, keeping the moment simple and personal. “Everyone thinks that they’re gonna have a party for him. But he leaves the day before… he wants to say goodbye on his own terms,” Carell explained.

Even years later, Carell believes a reboot wouldn’t land the same way. Still, his decision to ignore that early advice helped turn The Office into one of television’s most loved comedies.
