‘Free Me’: Tom Hanks’ Son Chet Says He’s Stranded in Colombia

Tom Hanks‘ son Chet Hanks says he is stuck in Colombia after traveling without his US passport. The 35-year-old actor shared the update in a candid Instagram video, explaining that he cannot board a flight back to the United States. Hanks said he has “no f—ing idea” how he will fix the situation.

Chet Hanks claims he can’t leave Colombia

Chet Hanks said he had been in Puerto Rico for a birthday celebration before deciding on a spontaneous trip to Medellín, Colombia, to see a friend. He traveled light and brought only his Greek passport. His US passport was close to expiring, and he noted that some countries can deny entry if a passport is near its expiration date.

Trouble started at the airport. Airline staff informed him that he could not fly back to the United States using only a foreign passport. He said they told him that if he entered on a foreign passport, he would need a “green card to get back into America.“ He pointed out that he does not have one because he is an American citizen. Without his US passport in hand, he said he’s ”literally stuck in Colombia,“ with no way to board his flight home.

Chet Hanks said the only U.S. Embassy that can sort out his situation sits in Bogotá. He did not sound eager to head there. He admitted he had no clear plan, and vented his frustration and asked to be “freed.” Later, he took to Instagram Stories with an update.

He wrote, “Estamos bien, no te preocupes,” and added a Colombian flag. The message translates to “We’re fine, don’t worry.” Social media lit up fast.
