Mahesh Babu & Priyanka Chopra-Led Epic New Movie Gets Release Date

S.S. Rajamouli’s upcoming project, led by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, now has an official global release timeframe. The announcement marks the director’s return after the international success of RRR, with the new film positioned as a major theatrical event.

Varanasi gets 2027 release date

S.S. Rajamouli’s next directorial venture, Varanasi, gets an official release date. The film will release in theaters worldwide on April 7, 2027. The action-adventure epic stars Mahesh Babu as Rudhra and Lord Rama, Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Mandakini, and Prithviraj Sukumaran as the antagonist, a scientist named Kumbha.

The film covers thousands of years and features global locations including Antarctica, Africa, and the Indian city of Varanasi. Official publicity material describes it as “in the vein of Indiana Jones and James Bond.” Composer MM Keeravani, who won the Oscar for “Naatu Naatu” from RRR, returns to score the project.

Mahesh Babu leads Telugu cinema with films like Srimanthudu, Bharat Ane Nenu, and Maharshi. Priyanka Chopra Jonas adds to her Bollywood and Hollywood portfolio with titles such as Bajirao Mastani, Mary Kom, Citadel, and The Matrix Resurrections. Prithviraj Sukumaran works across multiple Indian languages and recently appeared in Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.

K.L. Narayana and S.S. Karthikeya produce the film under the Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business banners. The team revealed the first-look footage in November 2025.

Varanasi follows Rajamouli’s 2022 global blockbuster RRR, which ranked as the fifth-highest-grossing Indian film and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Rajamouli confirmed he will not pursue a sequel to RRR and instead focuses on telling new stories like Varanasi.

The city of Varanasi, which plays a central role in the film, ranks among India’s holiest sites. Devotees believe Lord Shiva founded the city, which sits along the Ganges River and serves as a key location for Hindu rituals, prayers, and funeral rites.
