LeBron James’ 21-Year Run as All-Star Starter Comes to an End

In an unexpected turn of events, LeBron James will not be starting in the NBA All-Star Game 2026, marking the end of a remarkable 21-year streak. The news has sent shockwaves through the sports world, with fans and fellow athletes alike reflecting on his incredible legacy. This development highlights a changing era in the NBA, given James’ influence that extends far beyond his on-court achievements.

LeBron James loses All-Star starter status after 21 years

LeBron James’ 21-year streak as an NBA All-Star starter has come to an end. For the first time since his rookie season, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer wasn’t named to the starting lineup. The NBA revealed the starting lineups for the 2026 All-Star Game on Monday, January 19, unveiling the top players from the Western and Eastern Conferences.

However, LeBron James’ notable absence from the list was a shocker for basketball enthusiasts. With the starting lineups already announced, the NBA head coaches will be choosing the reserves. Hence, James’ future in the game will be determined by them, or potentially by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

His recent sciatica issues may have impacted his voting outcome. It caused him to miss the first 14 games of the season and the conclusion of his record streak of 1,297 consecutive games with at least 10 points.

The basketball star has maintained a strong level of performance, averaging 25.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game since the end of the streak. However, it appears that this was not sufficient to secure a starting position in the All-Star Game this year.

LeBron James’ streak of 21 consecutive All-Star Game starter selections has therefore concluded, marking a notable shift in his illustrious career. He was a starter for 21 straight years, although he chose not to play the game last year. James opted out just 90 minutes before tip-off due to foot and ankle discomfort.

The 2026 NBA All-Star Game will adopt a USA versus World format. Commissioner Silver cited the Winter Olympics and the NHL’s 4 Nations tournament as influencing factors. The change aims to revitalise the event following criticism of stagnant play in recent years.
