GTA Online’s Launch is a Predictable Mess, But Rockstar is Working On It

When hundreds of thousands of consumers try to hammer your servers all at once for the first time, the result is never good. As much time as Rockstar Games had to prepare for GTA Online‘s launch, it simply wasn’t enough.

GTA Online has officially debuted, but chances are if you’ve tried to hop online you’ve been met with a range of errors that boot you back to the game’s Story Mode. The worst, and most common, of these errors come at the end of character creation which not only keep you from seeing the online world for your first time, but result in you having to re-create your character. Of course, the first character you make is your best and can never be repeated—or at least in my case, anyway.

Rockstar is well aware of the problems, and have consequently updated their support page with the following key issues they’re addressing:

  • Occasional “Rockstar Cloud Servers Unavailable” error message
  • Freezing sometimes while loading into first race in GTAO with “waiting for other players” on the screen
  • Intermittent “Failed to Host a GTA Online Session” error messages
  • Race Corona (start area, marker) occasionally not showing up for first race
  • Errors saying “Timed out when matchmaking for a compatible GTA Online Session to join”
  • Occasional “Failed to start job” errors
  • General issues with the Social Club site and Social Club features (slow loading, failed logins, emails not arriving, etc).

Time and time again when companies release games to a large audience they fail to make the necessary preparations for the demands of launch. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn recently had one of the worst MMO launches in history, and now we’ll have to be patient with another one of this year’s biggest titles.

In the meantime, why don’t you put together an outfit to look like Breaking Bad’s Walter White?
