Mystique Takes Over in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’

There’s a certain mystique about Mystique, a villain who spent several X-Men films hardly saying a word but who then gradually revealed herself to be one of the most interesting characters in the franchise. For three films now she has been played by Academy Award-winner Jennifer Lawrence (which probably explains the boost in screen time) in the latest trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse we see that she’s taking center stage like never before in the upcoming sequel.

Yes, the time has finally come to look at what X-Men: Apocalypse is actually ABOUT, and not just who the villain is. After several teases promising us that Apocalypse really is the villain and that Psylocke will totes cut that car in half, the latest (and supposedly final) trailer gives us a look at what the characters are actually doing. Mystique has arrived at Xavier’s mansion to warn him about the threat of Apocalypse, and now it looks like it’s up to her to assemble a new team of young X-Men to stave off the devastation.

Like most of the X-Men movies, X-Men: Apocalypse seems to be a pastiche of existing, popular X-Men comics. Putting together a team of inexperienced X-Men as a last-ditch effort to stop an unstoppable monster? That’s Giant-Sized X-Men #1 from 1975. A former villain taking over teaching duties at Xavier’s Mansion, teaching the kids valuable but hard-boiled lessons about survival? That’s Emma Frost, not Mystique.

The list will probably go on, but for now here’s what we’ve got: an encouraging trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse. Take a look below, and keep an eye out for when X-Men: Apocalypse premieres on May 27, 2016.
