An American ‘Black Mirror’ Adaptation Is In Development

In 2013, Robert Downey Jr.’s production company optioned an episode of the British TV series “Black Mirror” as a potential feature film. But the entire series may be heading to America in the near future.

Variety is reporting that Endemol Shine North America is developing “Black Mirror” for an American audience. Series creator Charlie Brooker and producer Annabel Jones brought “Black Mirror” to UK’s Channel 4 in 2011 as a darkly funny sci-fi anthology series in the vein of “The Twilight Zone.” Brooker and Jones are said to have participated in discussions with Endemol about the new adaptation, but further details were unannounced.

Only seven episodes of “Black Mirror” have been produced to date. However, that hasn’t stopped the series from picking up North American fans, thanks to its placement on Netflix.

While Endemol owes Netflix a debt for introducing American viwers to “Black Mirror,” the company also indicated its desire to build up its own streaming service in competition to Amazon Plus, Hulu and Netflix. However, Endemol Shine CEOs Cris Abrego and Charlie Corwin stated their desire to continue working with other streaming services while developing their own platform.

“Black Mirror” doesn’t currently have a US network attached, but if Brooker and Jones have an active role in the remake then it should find a few interested bidders.
