Final Fantasy 13 Trilogy Has Shipped Over 11 Million Copies, Coming to PC

Square Enix has announced that the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, which includes Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2, and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, have accumulated over 11 million shipped to retailers. This figure puts it up next to the best-selling that Square/Square Enix has ever had to offer, including Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X, except that it’s across three games, of course.

Given details shared in the past, the sales for each game are roughly as follows, give or take a few hundred thousand:

  • Final Fantasy XIII: 6.5 million
  • Final Fantasy XIII-2: 3.1 million
  • Lightning Returns Final Fantasy XIII: 1.4 million

It isn’t particularly shocking that sales have dived noticeably in sales per installment. The series initially appealed to a demographic outside of its area of expertise, and has further targeted that audience with each additional installment. Many Final Fantasy fanatics such as myself have become completely disinterested in the process.

Square Enix has had high expectations for its releases over the past few years. Tomb Raider managed to sell 3.4 million copies in four weeks, but Square Enix considered the figure disappointing. It’s difficult to imagine what it has to say about Final Fantasy’s latest offerings.

Thankfully, Final Fantasy XV is shaping up to be a mighty good game, as indicated by the latest TGS 2014 trailer. It’s had an incredibly long development cycle, which should mean that there’s been quality discussion within the game design team to figure out what the game needs to satisfy the audience that cares about its success the most: Final Fantasy fans.

Square Enix also revealed that each of the three games in the Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy is coming to PC. Final Fantasy XIII will debut on PC October 9th for $15.99. The other two will arrive at a later date. All three will have Steam support meaning Steam Trading Cards and other features will be included.
