‘Kong: Skull Island’ Gets a Comic Book Prequel Series

Today, there’s a new king of the jungle as Kong: Skull Island reboots the classic King Kong mythos for a new generation. But you won’t have to wait until Godzilla vs. King Kong to get your next giant monster fix. Legendary Comics has a new Kong project coming out in less than a month!

Legendary Comics has announced that a prequel series, Skull Island: The Birth of Kong will launch on April 1. Writer Arvid Nelson and the artist known as Zid will handle the four-issue storyline, which will explore the origins of King Kong himself as well as the deeper mysteries of Skull Island.

According to Legendary, the story will serve as both a sequel and a prequel to the film, while following “a secret team of Monarch operatives returning to Skull Island to discover the truth behind Kong and the island he is born to protect. In doing so, they unlock an ancient history of monster conflict, witness the primal war between Kong and an otherworldly ecosystem of deadly new creatures, and finally reveal how this lonely god became the last of his kind.”

Of course, by promising the birth of Kong, it implies that everyone’s favorite giant monster had parents on the island. And the preview artwork appears to depict the Monarch team running into some trouble on their return to the island. Legendary also promises that the “dramatic new narrative that paves the way for what is to come, fans will discover new revelations that point to the future of the MonsterVerse.” Well, we know what’s coming: a rematch with Godzilla.

A preview of the first issue of Skull Island: The Birth of Kong is being featured on Comixology, courtesy of Loot Crate. Skull Island: The Birth of Kong # 1 will be available in comic stores everywhere and on Comixology on Wednesday, April 5.
