Warner Bros. Digital Plans ‘Static Shock’ Live Action Series

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. animation veteran producer, Sam Register was signed to head up the company’s new digital division. Today, the newly named Blue Ribbon Content of Warner Bros. Digital unveiled its programming and development slate. At the top of the list was a beloved superhero co-created by the late Dwayne McDuffie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reggie Hudlin (director of House Party, producer of Django Unchained; and a former writer of Marvel’s Black Panther comic) will be executive producing a live action “Static Shock” series based on the Static comic created in 1993 by McDuffie and Robert L. Washington with artist John Paul Leon for Milestone Media’s imprint at DC Comics.

Although Static originated in the world of comic books, the character is perhaps best known for the “Static Shock” animated series that premiered in 2000. McDuffie was also a writer on the “Static Shock” series.

“Static Shock” and the Static comic revolved around Virgil Hawkins, a teenager who found himself with electromagnetic based superpowers after an event called “The Big Bang” created several metahumans. As Static, Virgil was one of the few superheroes to emerge from “The Bang Babies.”

For the “Static Shock” live action series, Hudlin will be collaborating with Milestone Media co-founder Denys Cowan. If the “Static Shock” live action series goes forward, it will likely premiere on Machinima.

Warner Bros. Blue Ribbon Content will also be co-producing the upcoming Batman: The Animated Series Experience; which will recreate the Batcave from “Batman: The Animated Series” as a virtual reality experience.
