At WWE Payback, Big E took on Sheamus in a match where both superstars hoped to climb up the pecking order on WWE Friday Night SmackDown with a win. Both superstars showcased their impressive strength throughout the bout. The competitors hit each other with clubbing blows. Sheamus dodged a splash, which caused Big E to come crashing down on the apron. Sheamus took control of the match and targeted Big E’s leg to ground him. The Celtic Warrior dropped Big E with an Irish Curse backbreaker and continued to target his leg.

Big E countered a diving clothesline with a belly-to-belly suplex. Sheamus hit an Alabama Slam for a two count. He locked in a Cloverleaf, but Big E reached the ropes to break the hold. Big E hit his classic spear on the apron to gain some momentum. Sheamus locked in a heel-hook, but Big E escaped. The Celtic Warrior blasted Big E with a nasty knee to the face. Sheamus hoped to seal the win with a Brogue Kick, but Big E countered it into a powerbomb. A Big Ending earned Big E the victory.
