Ric Flair Breaks Down His Dispute Over ‘The Man’ Trademark With WWE: ‘I Have No Beef With Becky’

TMZ caught up with Ric Flair and The Nature Boy was asked about his current situation with WWE over his rights to “The Man” catchphrase. Flair talked about getting a hold of WWE’s lawyer (not confirmed but he may be referring to long-time attorney for Vince McMahon Jerry McDevitt) back in August of 2018 and how he was blown off by him twice.

Flair then talks about telling Triple H that he was going to file and clarifies the situation has nothing to do with the respect he has for Becky Lynch whatsoever. He even states later on that Becky can have the catchphrase win or lose. Flair adds that his daughter Charlotte was mad at him not knowing that his dealing is not with Becky, but with the company. You can read the full transcription and watch the full video below:

“When I first saw this go down in August of 2018. I thought cool, “The Man.” My gimmick vs. my daughter, Charlotte. Okay? That’s the day it started right after SummerSlam. I thought cool. I said I’m gonna make some money, it’s my trademark, they have it to use.

“I sent them a text and their lawyer, who just has no respect for me whatever which is something I’m not going to deal with much longer. He said, ‘You’re wrong. It’s not even close.’ I said, ‘It’s not even close?’ So I sent him another text, and he didn’t respond. So I had my lawyer call him and he blew off my lawyer. This is all in 2018 or in January of ’19. So I go, ‘Okay.’ So I called, I told Hunter, I said, ‘Hunter, I’m going to file.’ I mean, the reason they don’t have it, my understanding, is the reason they don’t have it is because it’s too close to mine. So okay, let’s say I’ve been saying ‘To be The Man…’ which I have trademarked, I wrote a book To Be The Man

“Here’s the deal: I love Becky Lynch and no one has supported the women’s division more than me as an outsider. As a matter of fact, I’ve told the guys, and I would have texted Becky last night and Sasha but I’m sure Becky – I don’t know what the WWE’s spin has been to her, they stole it last night. It’s funny, my daughter is so mad at me cause I filed not even understanding it’s not with Becky. I have no beef with Becky.”
