Brian Cage / DoN
Brian Cage was reportedly set to be a mystery participant in the Casino Battle Royal at Double Or Nothing last month, but he was pulled due to IMPACT Wrestling officials not allowing the appearance.
PWInsider originally reported Cage, the current reigning IMPACT World Champion, was backstage at the show and was set to appear in the match until IMPACT officials caught wind and told him that he wasn’t allowed to compete.
This week’s issue of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter provides some more details about the situation, noting the idea was to see Cage look good in the match, but he’d ultimately be eliminated. It was said Cage didn’t clear the appearance with IMPACT, and Don Callis was contacted shortly before the match and he didn’t think it was in their [IMPACT’s] best interest to have their World Champion lose a pre-show battle royal. That thought process was said to strictly be based on the ‘old school’ thought of protecting your world champion, and making sure he is positioned as a star.
Meltzer went on to speculate that IMPACT wasn’t completely against Cage appearing in theory, but it might have had more of a chance if the appearance was pre-approved and they had a better creative spot that made sense for both sides.
Lucha Bros Listed As IMPACT Alumni
This week’s issue of the Observer also noted that the Lucha Bros, Pentagon Jr and Fenix, have been moved to the alumni section of the IMPACT Wrestling website. The Lucha Bros recently lost the IMPACT Tag Team Championship to LAX at the Rebellion pay-per-view in April, and were not used on last week’s set of TV tapings in New York.
According to a previous report from the Observer, the Lucha Bros will be exclusive in the United States to All Elite Wrestling moving forward. It was said that the duo was tying up their loose ends storyline-wise with other U.S.-based promotions so they could join AEW.
