The surprising cameo happens within the first ten minutes of the premiere. Two gentlemen cross the street, played by Matt Damon and David Letterman. Their appearance lasts just six seconds.

The cameo began as a research idea while Damon prepared for Letterman’s Netflix show. The team discovered that Letterman had long wanted to become a background actor. Showrunner Isabel Richardson saw an opportunity for Letterman.

She explained the idea to Vulture, “It’d be really fun for Dave to do this with Academy Award-winner Matt Damon, and it tied into his origin story really well.” She thought Damon could recreate that experience. The actor reportedly loved the idea immediately.

The team approached The Gilded Age, with producer Kate Churchill arranging the cameo alongside support from HBO executives and Julian Fellowes. Churchill recalled her reaction when the proposal arrived. She said, “I just started laughing.”

However, organizing the cameo wasn’t particularly simple, and scheduling both celebrities proved challenging for production. The team also needed a controlled filming environment. Damon additionally had to be paid as background talent.
