A Charlie’s Angels actress revealed that a costar once asked her to join a threesome. The surprising proposition happened during a flight to Hawaii. The cast was traveling there to film the series. She declined the offer but respected her costar’s openness about her sexuality.
Jaclyn Smith revealed the story in a new People interview and in her memoir, I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie. She recalled that Tanya Roberts asked her to join Roberts and her husband, Barry Roberts. Roberts had an open marriage and, according to Smith, “wasn’t shy about it in the least” or about propositioning people to “swing” with them.
Smith ultimately turned down Roberts’ invitation. However, she did not view the proposition negatively. Instead, Smith described Roberts’ “honesty about her sexuality” as “brave and self-aware.” Roberts died in 2021 at age 65. She joined Charlie’s Angels after Shelley Hack’s exit and appeared as Julie Rogers during the show’s fifth and final season.
The revelation comes as Charlie’s Angels approaches its 50th anniversary. The series premiered in 1976 and ran for five seasons. Smith was the only original Angel to remain with the show throughout its entire run.

What other Charlie’s Angels secrets did Jaclyn Smith reveal?
Smith’s memoir contains several other revelations about the series. She recalled the different personalities of Kate Jackson and Cheryl Ladd after Ladd joined the cast. Smith said she sometimes felt “caught between the two because they were so opposite.”
She also opened up about the pay differences among the original Angels. Smith said she was initially offered $3,000 per episode, compared with $5,000 for Farrah Fawcett and $10,000 for Jackson. She pushed back and eventually negotiated a raise. She said, “I was probably a little more aggressive about that than today.”
Smith further recalled the growing presence of cocaine during the fifth season. She wrote, “The more drug use I saw, the more time I spent in my motor home.” She also made clear that she had “never” used cocaine and “never will.”
Despite the changes and difficult moments, Smith said her friendship with Fawcett and Jackson remained strong. She said, “That sisterhood was strong,” reflecting on their lasting friendship.
