Madison Bailey nearly drowned while filming a dangerous underwater scene for Outer Banks Season 5. Recently, Chase Stokes revealed how he helped his co-star when she struggled to stay afloat during a shoot sequence in Barbados.
The scene was particularly difficult for Bailey, as she had to hold an unconscious JJ Maybank, played by Rudy Pankow, above the water. It required them to stay underwater for an extended period. While filming, Stokes realized that he could no longer see Bailey’s face, so he jumped off the boat to help her.
During a ‘Lie v. Lie’ game with Entertainment Weekly, Stokes recalled, “We were in Barbados, and there’s a scene when JJ gets knocked off of a boat, and he’s unconscious in the water and Kiara’s holding him up.” He added, “I realized that I couldn’t see Bails’ face anymore.”
The 33-year-old explained that it was really hard to communicate during the sequence. Stokes added, “I was like, ‘Oh no, Bails has been under there for a while.’ So I jumped off the boat, and I realized that she was not able to breathe underwater.”
Bailey confirmed that she was actually struggling during the scene and said she couldn’t “swim closer to the boat.” She also revealed that some people on the set initially thought she was performing the scene convincingly.
The actress recalled, “I was like, ‘I’m drowning.’ Everyone’s like, ‘Wow, she’s really good!'” Stokes joked in response, “They are like, ‘Wow, Chase is really committed to this. He just left the boat in the middle of the open ocean.'”
