The official synopsis reads, “When the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family and her rebellious maid find themselves trapped in a house built on humiliation and cruelty, they escape into a fantasy of sex, power, and revenge. What happens in the new Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story trailer?
The trailer shows Ella Beatty as Lizzie Borden, the murderess who was tried and acquitted for the gruesome murders of her father and stepmother. It opens up to Borden crushing a berry in her hand, while the words, “There’s nothing wrong with blood. Blood is power. Blood is freedom,” play in the background.
Things take a turn when the maid Bridget “Maggie” Sullivan, played by Vicky Krieps, acknowledges the way Lizzie’s parents have been treating her harshly. The two are then shown planning the murder. “A knife is too easy, and a rifle is almost too kind a way to go,” says Maggie. They settle for a hatchet used to butcher chickens.
The trailer shifts to showcase the Victorian aesthetic after the murder has taken place. “No way a woman could do this. This is the work of a man,” chimes a detective investigating the murder as Lizzie is shown washing the blood off her.
“Hell Hath No Fury, Like a Woman with an Axe,” flashes on the screen in bold letters as glimpses of Lizzie and Maggie’s relationship are shown. As the trailer comes to an end, Lizzie takes a final hit on her father with the weapon as he tries to crawl up a couch. It cuts to the present day when another famous serial killer, Aileen Wuornos, played by Sarah Paulson, overlooks the couch and claims to know what happened that day, 134 years ago.
The new season is created and written by Ian Brennan. The ensemble also includes Charlie Hunnam, Rebecca Hall, Billie Lourd, Jessica Barden, and Joey Pollari.
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story will have eight episodes and is set to premiere on Netflix on September 17, 2026.
