Former Fantastic Four star Ioan Gruffudd appears in a new historical musical drama that is now in theaters. Co-directed by Ben Smallbone and Joel David Smallbone, the film also stars Iain Glen, who previously played Bruce Wayne/Batman in DC’s Titans series.

Angel Studios’ Drummer Boy is now playing in theaters. Set during the American Revolutionary War, the film follows two brothers on opposite sides of the conflict, alongside an enslaved woman searching for freedom.

What is Ioan Gruffudd’s Revolutionary War movie about?

Drummer Boy’s plot takes place during the American Revolutionary War and shows an American soldier eventually falling in love with an enslaved woman. One brother sides with the Patriots, while the other joins the British forces. The two brothers ultimately face each other on opposite sides of the battlefield.

Joel David Smallbone co-directs the musical with his brother and stars as Jeremiah Clem. The ensemble cast also includes Lucas Leach as Benjamin Clem, Ioan Gruffudd as Nathaniel Clem, Melora Hardin as Rachel Clem, Charles Esten as Lord Balfour, Beth Easdown as Lady Elizabeth Balfour, Iain Glen as Major John Ambrose, and India Brown as Emmalin.

The movie is produced by Chip Diggins, alongside Kristy Choo, Luke Smallbone, and Justin Tolley. Red 56 and 2521 Entertainment are the production companies behind the project. Richard L. Ramsey has written the story. The creative team also includes cinematographer Cathal Watters and editor Andrew Chandler. The music is done by For King & Country.

Ahead of its theatrical release, the film received mixed-to-negative early reviews from critics. Early reactions have called its treatment clunky and dull on Rotten Tomatoes. Some reviewers have also criticized the musical numbers, arguing that they distract from the film’s more dramatic scenes.

The film is reportedly made on a modest budget of $10 million and is expected to garner close to $5 million in the opening weekend.
