Donald Trump’s presidency has prompted Alec Baldwin to reconsider the future of celebrities in American politics. During a recent podcast appearance, the actor shared why he believes voters may become more cautious about electing figures from the entertainment industry. Baldwin blamed Trump’s presidency for the same.
Why Baldwin believes voters may turn away from celebrity candidates
Alec Baldwin believes Donald Trump’s presidency could make it harder for actors and other entertainers to win public support if they decide to run for political office. The actor discussed the issue during an appearance on Kelly Ripa’s podcast, where he was also asked whether he would consider running for office.
Baldwin appeared on the November 4 episode of Let’s Talk Off Camera alongside his wife, Hilaria Baldwin. Ripa openly encouraged him to enter politics and even offered to manage his campaign. “I still want you to run for office, Alec, and I’m willing to run your campaign,” she told him. The actor immediately rejected the suggestion, responding, “Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.”
He said, “I mean, I thought about, I thought about that. First of all, I think truly, without getting into a whole quagmire here, I think truly that Trump has killed probably forever the notion of an entertainment figure popping into show business.”
Baldwin explained, “Trump, who comes from this TV show and sells to everybody the idea that he’s this crack businessman, I think it’s gonna be a long time before you see others. People are gonna want governors and senators and people who have had experience in government, and they’re not gonna wanna…they wanna play it safe.”
Hilaria challenged her husband’s view during the conversation, telling him, “I don’t agree with you either. I think you’re wrong.” Baldwin then jokingly changed his position and announced, “I’m running. I’m running. Let’s declare it now on the podcast.”
