Martha Stewart’s attempt to explain her controversial Halloween costume has reportedly created fresh tension behind the scenes at NBC. According to a new report, Savannah Guthrie is reportedly unhappy after Stewart appeared to blame TODAY co-host Craig Melvin for the outfit that sparked backlash.

Martha Stewart recently claimed she planned to wear a completely different costume. However, she changed her plans after Melvin accidentally spilled chocolate on her white sweater during a TODAY appearance. She said she had only 10 minutes to find another outfit and ended up dressing as a homeless person, a choice that drew widespread criticism.

According to Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice newsletter, Savannah Guthrie was not pleased with Stewart’s explanation. A source claimed the longtime TODAY anchor felt Stewart unfairly shifted responsibility onto her colleague instead of taking accountability herself.

“Savannah thinks Martha crossed a line,” the insider alleged. “She was lucky to be invited onto TODAY, and instead of taking responsibility for her own mistake, she decided to blame Craig. That was never going to sit well with Savannah.”

The source also claimed Guthrie is highly protective of the TODAY team and views criticism of one colleague as criticism of the entire show. “You attack Craig, you attack Savannah,” the insider said. “She considers herself responsible for everyone on that show. Nobody gets to come in, create a mess and then blame one of her colleagues.”

According to TMZ, Stewart shared the story while speaking at the CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally in Orlando. She explained that Melvin accidentally stained her sweater, leaving her scrambling for a last-minute Halloween costume. However, Stewart had already apologized for the outfit on November 1, acknowledging that it was insensitive and not funny.

The insider further claimed Stewart may have underestimated the fallout from her comments. “Savannah is the boss, and she takes the TODAY brand personally,” the source alleged. “Martha thought she was shifting the blame onto Craig, but instead she may have made a very powerful enemy at NBC.”
