Former ABC News Affiliate Anchor Joins Fox Station After Newsroom Layoffs

Former ABC anchor just found its new home at FOX 26, and the new weekend anchor has deep Houston roots. A veteran journalist is returning to his hometown after station layoffs ended his previous role, bringing over a decade of broadcast experience to the anchor desk.

Randall Newsome joins FOX 26

Aaron Fernandez-Wische, vice president of content creation and distribution at FOX 26, announced on LinkedIn that Randall Newsome is joining the station. Newsome will serve as the new weekend anchor and reporter. He succeeds Tom Zizka, who retired in May after nearly 28 years at the station, according to Chron.

“This is a homecoming for Randall, who was born in Houston and graduated from Texas Southern University,” Fernandez-Wische wrote. He also praised Newsome’s ability to connect with the community beyond the newsroom. “Randall and his family are pumped to be coming home, and we can’t wait for him to get started!” he added.

Newsome’s wife, fellow journalist Troy Newsome, celebrated the news in the comments section. “No one works harder or connects with people quite like him,” she wrote. “His work ethic, talent, and genuine compassion for others are unmatched.”

Newsome returns to Texas after spending four years as a morning news anchor at WMAR in Baltimore. He co-anchored Good Morning Maryland beginning in January 2023. His departure came amid a shake-up at WMAR, where the station shifted toward anchorless newscasts, per The Baltimore Banner.

Before Baltimore, Newsome spent over four years at WISH-TV in Indianapolis as a reporter and host. He created Gr8 Comeback, a series spotlighting local businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. He began his television career at KTVE/KARD in Monroe, La., in 2016.

Newsome graduated from Texas Southern University in 2012 and earned a master’s in specialized journalism from USC in 2016. He arrived fewer than two weeks after weekday morning anchor DaLaun Dillard departed the station. Raised in Fort Worth, Newsome also interned at Houston’s ABC13 in 2012.
