‘Lamest Concept:’ Met Gala 2027 Theme Sparks Criticism Mixed With Fun

The Met Gala has a new dress code, and social media has plenty to say about it. The theme for next year celebrates the clothes people wear every day, from T-shirts to jeans. Coming from a run of themes that celebrated high fashion and camp aesthetics over the years, some fans are unimpressed. While a few are simply intrigued, others are joking about what might turn up on the red carpet. Together, the reactions to the theme for Met Gala 2027 show an audience that is divided but very engaged.

Met Gala 2027 theme has online users with a variety of thoughts

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute announced the Met Gala 2027 theme titled “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday.” The gala is held each spring on the first Monday of May, and the Costume Institute’s spring 2027 show will explore how designers transform familiar garments, materials, and objects, inviting visitors to see them anew.

According to the museum, the exhibition will bring together works from The Costume Institute’s collection, key loans, and new acquisitions. It will examine how craft, construction, material experimentation, and conceptual wit give ordinary forms new possibilities.

The materials on show are wide-ranging. The museum lists jeans, T-shirts, and puffer coats alongside paper, plastic, and metal. Its page says the exhibition will reveal how “the seemingly unremarkable can inspire delight, surprise, and wonder.” It will also consider how meaning develops through use and care.

Online, the opinion split quickly. Among the critics, one user said, “What’s the point when men are gonna just show up wearing bland suits as per usual [?]” Another user gave their verdict, “Sounds like the lamest concept so far.”

Others leaned into humor: “Finally a theme [I’ve] been training for my whole life…” Someone else joked, “It’s going to get VERY avant garde… jeans worn as a hat, dresses made out of hiking boots, the mind boggles.”

Some users were simply curious. One said, “Good! I can’t wait to see what they all come up with.” Another defended the concept, writing, “Nah this theme is brilliant. [E]levating basic pieces like jeans and hoodies into high art makes fashion feel so much more connected to human experience.” A fourth urged, “Listen. Let [them] cook…”
