La Bola Negra hits Netflix in early December
The Spanish drama La Bola Negra is set to make its Netflix debut on December 2, 2026, following a successful theatrical run. Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2026. Its arrival on the streaming platform follows an impressive performance at Spain’s domestic box office, where it secured a notable position among the country’s top-performing films.
Set across three distinct years- 1932, 1937, and 2017- La Bola Negra follows the lives of Carlos, Sebastián, and Alberto, each navigating personal struggles shaped by the era in which they live. While Carlos longs for the freedom to be accepted, Sebastián’s romantic life unfolds against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War. Meanwhile, Alberto embarks on a journey that leads him to an unexpected revelation about his family’s past.
The three storylines intersect through shared themes of sexuality, social prejudice, violence, and inheritance. The film features an ensemble cast, including Guitarricadelafuente as Sebastián, Carlos González as Alberto, Miguel Bernardeau as Rafael Rodríguez Rapún, Milo Quifes as Carlos, Lola Dueñas as Teresa, and Penélope Cruz as Nené Romero, among others.
The film has also received largely positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. La Bola Negra currently holds an 85% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 129 reviews. Its audience reception has been even stronger, with a 97% audience score.
As previously reported by ComingSoon, the film has enjoyed a particularly impressive theatrical run in its home country. It has grossed $43.4 million worldwide, including €36.7 million in Spain, where it has sold more than 5.5 million tickets.
The production has become Spain’s highest-grossing domestic release of 2026. Moreover, it ranks third among the country’s highest-grossing Spanish films of all time. It has also secured the No. 10 spot on Spain’s all-time box office chart.
