Tony Stark could reportedly make a surprise appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars. While Robert Downey Jr. is set to portray Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, a new rumor suggests his iconic MCU character could also return in the form of an unusual variant.
New rumor describes a Tony Stark variant appearing in Avengers: Secret Wars
According to MCU insider James Mack, a variant of Tony Stark will reportedly appear in Avengers: Secret Wars. Mack shared the claim on X, describing the character as an unusual version of the iconic Marvel hero. He wrote, “A Tony Stark variant will be involved in the story of Avengers: Secret Wars. He is being described as ‘uninterested, lazy, hates being a hero, and an alcoholic.'”

However, these details remain unconfirmed rumors for now. One fan asked Mack whether an earlier leak was accurate. The insider responded that some parts were probably real. However, he suggested that most of the leaked information would not come to fruition.
Tony Stark first entered the MCU as a weapons manufacturer before transforming into one of Earth’s greatest heroes. His intelligence and technological innovations played a crucial role in protecting the world from numerous threats.
Over the years, Stark developed the Arc Reactor and his iconic Iron Man suits, along with advanced defense systems designed to protect humanity. However, his attempt to create a global peacekeeping system led to the creation of Ultron. He later developed EDITH, an advanced satellite-based defense system.
In Avengers: Endgame, Stark famously helped the Avengers solve the time-travel problem. This allowed them to retrieve the Infinity Stones and reverse Thanos’ devastating actions. If the latest rumor proves accurate, Avengers: Secret Wars could introduce a radically different version of the beloved hero.
A Tony Stark variant who lacks ambition and rejects heroism would offer a striking contrast to the original character. Such a portrayal could explore what happens when one of the MCU’s most brilliant minds has little interest in saving the world.
However, fans will have to wait for official confirmation to learn whether this alternate version of Stark will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. is set to portray Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the upcoming Marvel film features a massive ensemble cast and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026.
