Cocaine Bear producers have dropped a promising update on the film’s much-requested sequel. The 2023 black comedy hit could return sooner than expected.
Producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who worked on Cocaine Bear, recently appeared on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast. During the October 23 episode, host Matthew Belloni asked the duo about a potential Cocaine Bear sequel. The producers gave a hopeful response, saying, “Possible!” with one of them confirming that a script has been written.
Belloni then asked, “Best possible title for a Cocaine Bear sequel?” Miller replied, “Can’t say because it exists,” suggesting that a potential sequel already has a title. When Belloni asked about the plot, the duo declined to reveal more details.
Although an official announcement has yet to be made, Miller and Lord’s latest statement appears to indicate that the sequel will likely get the greenlight soon.

The original Cocaine Bear made a wild impression on audiences
Cocaine Bear is a black comedy horror film directed by Elizabeth Banks. The movie is loosely inspired by a 1985 incident in which an American black bear died after ingesting cocaine that had been dropped by a drug smuggler.
The film attracted attention online before its theatrical release in February 2023. Fans were fascinated by the film’s outrageous premise featuring a bear that goes on a violent rampage after ingesting cocaine.
Despite the anticipation, Cocaine Bear received mixed reviews. The movie currently holds a 65% critics’ score and a 71% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Some reviewers praised its absurd premise and dark humor, while others criticized its plot.
Cocaine Bear debuted at No. 3 on Netflix’s Top 10 movies chart on October 15, 2026. The black comedy horror film was released posthumously for Ray Liotta, who died in May 2022. The cast also includes Keri Russell, Alden Ehrenreich, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Isiah Whitlock Jr., and more.
