We Know Exactly How Jack Reacher Series Will End

Lee Child has spent nearly three decades building Jack Reacher into a thriller powerhouse, and now the author has finally revealed how he could bring his wandering hero’s journey to a close.

Lee Child teases how he’ll end his Jack Reacher novel series

After 31 Reacher novels and over 100 million copies sold, Lee Child has thought carefully about how the series might finish. The British author shared three possible endings with USA Today, and each one takes the character in a different direction.

The first option comes from a scrapped project Child titled Die Lonely. In that scenario, Reacher faces an impossible choice: save a stranger or die “bleeding to death on a filthy floor in a motel bathroom.” True to form, he would sacrifice himself. The second option might feel familiar to longtime readers. Reacher boards a bus, just as he does at the close of many Reacher books, and the story simply ends. Readers never learn his destination.

The third option has the possibility to shock fans. Child imagines Reacher pausing on his way to the bus depot and deciding to stay put: “He’s on his way to the bus depot at the end of the book as normal, and he suddenly stops and he says, you know what? I kind of like it here. Maybe I’ll adopt a dog and rent an apartment.” That ending would upend the restless nature that defines Reacher. The former military police officer has never settled anywhere across the entire series.

Prime Video, however, shows no urgency to wrap things up. The streaming platform has renewed its hit Reacher series, starring Alan Ritchson and the spin-off Neagley returns for Season 2. Child, for his part, believes the character will outlast any ending he writes. He calls Reacher “perpetual” and notes that fiction will always need a strong, silent hero to take down the bad guys.
